AFI-DISCOVERY CHANNEL SILVERDOCS DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL AND THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE ANNOUNCE SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR THEMATIC STRAND “PEACEBUILDING ON SCREEN”

Silver Spring, Maryland, June 14, 2010—AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival and the United States Institute of Peace today announced the special programs for the “Peacebuilding on Screen” program during the seven-day event set to run June 21-27 in the Washington, DC area. Through both its film and International Documentary Conference content, AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs provides a forum through which meaningful discussions and new insights about international peace building and conflict management can be achieved. The program will feature six independently produced documentaries from around the globe followed by panel discussions with leading thinkers.

“As our global conflicts and seemingly insurmountable barriers to peace become more pervasive in the news and mainstream media, conflict resolution and profound stories of bridging differences are also becoming increasingly popular in documentary film,” said Sky Sitney, Festival Artistic Director. “We are honored to be partnering with the USIP to bring these stories and substantive discussions to the Festival and its audiences.”

The films and special programs include:

BUDRUS / Israel/Palestinian Territories/USA, 2009, 82 minutes (Director: Julia Bacha)— This rousing film about one Palestinian village and its unlikely hero—humble family man turned activist Ayed Morrar—reveals the power of ordinary people to peaceably fight for extraordinary change. Post-screening discussion on Saturday, June 26 at 4:00 p.m. featuring Julia Bacha, Filmmaker; Ayed Morrar, Subject; and Ronit Avni, Founder/Director, Just Vision. Moderated by Steven Heydemann, USIP VP for Grants and Fellowships, Special adviser to Muslim World Initiative. The film will also screen on Thursday, June 24 at 7:15 p.m.

FOUND / Canada, 2009, 6 minutes (Director: Paramita Nath)—For Laotian-Canadian poet Souvankham Thammavongsa, a discarded scrapbook sheds light on a harsh infancy in Southeast Asia emphasizing how family memory is often an aggregation of disparate pieces. The film will precede both screenings of GRACE, MILLY, LUCY… CHILD SOLDIERS.

GRACE, MILLY, LUCY…CHILD SOLDIERS / Canada, 2010, 73 minutes (Director: Raymonde Provencher)—Grace Akallo is one of many northern Ugandan women attempting to live a normal adulthood after being forced as children to fight for the Lord's Resistance Army, a notoriously brutal rebel group. Akallo and several others have become activists, striving to help female ex-rebels find a voice in the world, acceptance at home and forgiveness from one another. Post-screening discussion on Friday, June 25 at 1:45 p.m. featuring the filmmaker Raymonde Provencher, former Ugandan member of Parliament and chief negotiator between the LRA and the Ugandan government Betty Bigombe, co-founder ENOUGH Project, John Prendergast, film subject Grace Akallo, and moderated by Kathleen Kuehnast, Gender Advisor, Centers of Innovation (USIP). The film will also screen on Tuesday, June 22 at 3:15 p.m. (International Premiere)

LA ISLA—ARCHIVES OF A TRAGEDY / Germany/Guatemala, 2010, 85 minutes (Director: Uli Stelzner)—Guatemala’s violent history of repression at the hands of extremist political regimes is laid bare following the discovery of a vast archive of secret police documents. As a team of dedicated forensic specialists sort through the files, the voices of the disappeared challenge the culture of impunity that plagued the nation. Post-screening discussion on Thursday, June 24 at 1:45 p.m. featuring the filmmaker Uli Stelzner; Tani Adams, Research Director, Institute of Learning for Social Reconciliation (Guatemala); Ambassador Francisco Villagrán de León, Embassy of Guatemala; and moderated by Tom Gjelten, NPR senior correspondent. The film will also screen on Tuesday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m.

MY SO CALLED ENEMY / USA, 2010, 87 minutes (Director: Lisa Gossels)—Filmed over a seven-year period, the film follows a group of teenage Israeli and Palestinian girls committed to mutual understanding and a just solution to the conflict that continues to rage in their homeland. There will be a post-screening discussion on Wednesday, June 23 at 7:15 p.m. featuring Lisa Gossels, Filmmaker; Manal Omar, United States Institute of Peace; Robin Wright, Journalist and Foreign Policy Analyst; and moderated by Tara Sonenshine, Executive Vice President, United States Institute of Peace. The film will also screen on Thursday, June 24 at 12:30 p.m. (World Premiere)

WAR DON DON / Sierra Leone, 2010, 85 minutes (Director: Rebecca Richman Cohen)—Is Issa Sesay a war criminal guilty of crimes against humanity? Or a reluctant fighter who protected civilians and played a crucial role in forging peace in Sierra Leone? A trial in the United Nations’ “special court” in the heart of Freetown attempts to reveal the answer to this question. Post-screening discussion on Tuesday, June 22 at 4:15 p.m. includes Rebecca Richman Cohen, filmmaker, US Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues and former Chief Prosecutor, Special Court for Sierra Leone, Stephen Rapp, Trial Monitor for the Open Society Justice Initiative, Alpha Sesay, Abdul Tejan Cole, Open Society Institute, and moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Roy Gutman. The film will also screen on Saturday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m.
