REGRETTERS
Marcus Lindeen
SWEDEN, 2010, 60 MINUTES
Mikael and Orlando are two aging Swedes with something unusual in common: They are both biological males who have undergone sex reassignment surgery but now wish to ‘change back.’ In fact, one of them already has. This deceptively simple film, styled as a conversation between its two remarkable subjects, weaves together archival footage, photographs, and the pair’s startling testimony to form a complex philosophical interrogation of gender performance and selfhood. Revealing and sometimes shocking, this discourse on repression, homophobia, and identity evolves from a mere exchange of words into a memorable meditation on the very nature of being

THE OTHER CITY
Susan Koch
USA, 2010, 90 MINUTES
To the outside world, Washington, D.C. is a city of gleaming white monuments and powerful people. The White House, the Capitol Building and President Obama. But that is the public face—there is another city, the one experienced by those who live here, the city that is in the throes of an HIV/AIDS epidemic. Three percent of DC residents are infected with HIV, a rate that far surpasses the CDC’s one percent threshold for “severe epidemic.” This film tells the story of those in the city living with HIV/AIDS and the government inaction that allowed the epidemic to spiral out of control.

LAST ADDRESS
A series of exterior shots of buildings all have one thing in common: they were the last residential addresses of some of New York’s most prominent artists who lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses. This simple yet poignant short film is an elegant tribute to those remarkable people whose voices were silenced much too soon.

MAKING THE BOYS
Crayton Robey
USA, 2009, 93 MINUTES
In 1968, a play called The Boys in the Band opened off-Broadway. Written by Mart Crowley, the drama centered around a group of homosexual friends who gather for a birthday party that quickly turns ugly. No one could have guessed the impact that the small production would have on the tempestuous social climate of the 1960s. MAKING THE BOYS traces the history of the play and how its surprising success gave many people struggling with their sexuality the courage to come out of the closet and stand up for their rights. Interviews with Mart Crowley as well as several other notable playwrights help shed new light on a cultural milestone that has unfortunately faded from memory with the passage of time.
