SUNDAY AT SILVERDOCS: 
 

10:00 a.m. SILVERDOCS presents the East Coast premiere of CARMEN MEETS BORAT, a film that follows as 17-year-old Carmen’s teenage trials and tribulations are interrupted when her sleepy Romanian town gets an unexpected visit from a man named Borat with an American film crew in tow. 

10:15 a.m. Filmmaker Ferenc Moldova’nyi presents the East Coast premiere of ANOTHER PLANET (MÁSIK BOLYGÓ), a powerful globe-spanning film that introduces us to children who are struggling to survive as trash scavengers, soldiers, and sex workers. 

10:30 a.m. Filmmaker François Verster presents the US premiere of SEA POINT DAYS, an examination of post-Apartheid South Africa focusing on the formerly segregated public pools and promenade at Sea Point, a gorgeous section of Cape Town that now reflects the country’s immense diversity. 

10:45 a.m. Filmmakers David Barba and James Pellerito present the East Coast premiere of POP STAR ON ICE, a funny, fast-paced, and intimate film that follows the tumultuous career of ice skating superstar Johnny Weird, who hasn’t quite achieved Olympic glory. 

12:15 p.m. Filmmakers Alex Vlack and Damani Backer present the East Coast premiere of STILL BILL, a multi-faceted look at the intriguing and insightful Bill Withers, the Grammy-winning songwriter and musician who stopped making albums in 1985, after a 15-year career that included such hits as “Lean on Me” and “Just the Two of Us.” 

12:45 p.m. Filmmaker Aron Gaudet presents THE WAY WE GET BY, a moving film about a group of senior citizens in Bangor, Maine who decided to get involved with the American war effort by greeting thousands of troops in the airport, offering comfort to many who might otherwise have been forgotten by society, sharing the bonds of morality and the need for human contact. 

1:00 p.m. Filmmaker Alexander Olch presents THE WINDMILL MOVIE, a complex portrait of his endearing and contradictory late teacher, the celebrated documentarian Richard P. Rogers who, despite amassing more than 20 years’ and 200 hours’ worth of footage, was never able to complete his autobiographical magnum opus. 

1:15 p.m. Filmmaker Patrick Shen presents the World premiere of THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS, a film in which the figure of the invisible janitor at last acquires a face, name, and personality through a probing look at the wisdom that comes from lives lived fully.  Showing with LESSONS FROM THE NIGHT. 

2:30 p.m. Producer Amy Dotson presents SWEETHEARTS OF THE PRISON RODEO, a feature following male and female convicts as they compete and train for slots at the annual Oklahoma Prison Rodeo in McAlester, Oklahoma, where an eight-second bull ride becomes the most important time in the world. 

3:00 p.m. Filmmaker Beadie Finzi presents ONLY WHEN I DANCE, an uplifting film tracing the improbable journey of two teenage ballet hopefuls from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the highest levels of international ballet competition. 

3:15 p.m. SHORTS PROGRAM 5: DERAILED DREAMS, featuring UTOPIA, PART 3: THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHOPPING MALL, LONG DISTANCE, SANZA HANZA (KING SURFER), 12 NOTES DOWN (12 TONER NED), and GLASS TRAP (SZKLANA PULAPKA). 

3:30 p.m. Filmmaker Jon Blair presents the World premiere of DANCING WITH THE DEVIL, a gripping film that offers an intimate look at the running battle between police and drug lords in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.  In the midst of staggering violence, Pastor Dione dos Santos tries to broker peace among all parties. 

5:15 p.m. Filmmaker Renzo Martens presents the US premiere of EPISODE 3: ‘ENJOY POVERTY’, which tracks the satirical filmmaker’s journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo where, having witnessed the way in which Western interests profit from poverty in Africa, he attempts to persuade the poor that their poverty is a natural resource they should learn to exploit. 

5:30 p.m. Filmmaker Geralyn Pezanoski presents the East Coast premiere of MINE, an meditation on issues of humanity and loss arising from Hurricane Katrina victims’ attempts to reclaim their pets after they have been adopted by new families. Post-screening discussion with the filmmaker and film subjects, Jessie and Lorrainne Pullins.  

6:15 p.m. Filmmaker Mitch McCabe presents YOUTH KNOWS NO PAIN, a film following the immersion of a plastic surgeon’s daughter into the vast anti-aging industry and her ongoing struggle against the ever-present temptation of eternal youth. 

7:30 p.m. SILVERDOCS presents the US premiere of THE SOUND OF INSECTS- RECORD OF A MUMMY, an experimental and impressionistic evocation of the last days of a mysterious man whose mummified corpse was found in a remote forest after his self-imposed starvation. 

7:45 p.m. Filmmakers Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher present the East Coast premiere of OCTOBER COUNTRY, a finely crafted portrait of a family in crisis that offers a beautiful representation of America’s poor.  

8:30 p.m. SILVERDOCS presents MORE THAN A GAME, a remarkable coming-of-age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity that follows the incredible rise (and occasional fall) of five talented young basketball players from Akron, Ohio, led by future NBA superstar LeBron James.
