BI THE WAY

USA, 2008, 93 Minutes, English

DC Area Premiere

Generation Y? What about Generation Why Not? Brittany Blockman and Josephine Decker take a road trip across the country investigating real people’s feelings on bisexuality and what appears to be a sharp uptick in teens and 20-somethings who self-identify as bi-available, hetero-flexible or pan-sexual. Is it a fad, a sexual revolution, or a genetic stamp? Are such popular programs as THE OC, ONE TREE HILL, DEGRASSI and ONCE AND AGAIN, not to mention the infamous Madonna-Britney lip-lock on MTV, influencing sexual ambiguity? And are bisexuals simply closeted homosexuals, as many in the gay community believe?

Set to a soundtrack featuring the Bastard Fairies, Fischerspooner, Fridge, MGMT and others, we journey to Memphis, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago and Brooklyn, following five members of the “whatever generation” in sexual flux. Pam was expelled from school and threatened with being disowned by her family after kissing a girl. Josh, the 11-year-old son of TARNATION director Jonathan Caouette, thinks he may be bisexual—or perhaps he’s simply trying to ensure his gay father’s love. Swingers Taryn and Rage push the limits of their relationship. Hip-hop dancer Tah is rejected by his community in response to his newfound love. And David, the effeminate 24-year-old writer and star of Chicago’s hit Planet of the Bisexuals, fights assumptions that he’s gay.

Their stories are intercut with leading experts from a variety of fields—sociology, biology, physiology, and sexologists from the famed Kinsey Institute. All of this makes for a rollicking adventure through the 21st century’s sexual revolution.
