Mojoco: Citizen 2.0 & The Portable Video Moment

The new web environment is “people-centric.” According to a new report from the Center for Social Media much of the evolution in online infrastructures is centered around behaviors of the individual. By virtue of that change we citizens are asked to evolve, be prepared to pick from the bevy of choices, engage with more communities, and tell better stories of our lives & perspectives – in essence we are asked to become Citizen 2.0. Ubiquitous video accounts for a lot of the online evolution. As modes of production become cheaper, what with $100 cameras and audio recorders, this session asks what is Citizen 2.0's story language for video in the online space? How do we make sure we're making efficient use of the medium? What is the art of portable video storytelling for online environments? The power of the web is gathering communities around niche issues and fueling local and national action. In this environment it seems prudent to ask ourselves, “if Citizen 2.0 is going to control the conversation of the future, how can I be Citizen 2.0?”

From Stories to Ideas: Exploring the Visual Essay with 21st Century Students

What will it be like when students entering college are assigned a course in digital composing rather than one in writing? When the primary software for working with ideas is not a word processor, but a visual editor? These questions are being explored in the Plangere Culture Lab at Rutgers University, where faculty, lab mentors, interns, and current undergraduates are working together composing "idea-driven visual essays." The early results of their efforts have been posted to YouTube (newhumanities),  contributing to local and national debates about the future and the function of the humanities in the twenty-first century. Three of the lab mentors, all recent graduates, will discuss what is involved in learning how to compose collaboratively in real time using multimedia. Examples of their work will be presented to initiate a conversation about what happens when the emphasis in digital composing shifts from stories to ideas and how this shift intersects with the work of higher education.
