Ethics and Documentaries: Teaching Critical Thinking with “Reality”

Are there ethical lines that documentary filmmakers should not cross as they present their versions of reality? This session, designed for middle and high school teachers with little or no knowledge of using documentaries in the classroom, will try to address two issues:

What are the tools that documentary filmmakers use to present their messages, and how can we help our students understand the ways reality can be constructed in nonfiction film?

What ethical considerations should we keep in mind when watching documentary films, and how can we use the ethical dilemmas of filmmakers to improve our students’ critical thinking and reasoning?

Sneak Preview:  VOICES UNBOUND: THE STORY OF THE FREEDOM WRITERS

Come see a screening of a work-in-progress documentary about the Freedom Writers, a group of 150 “at risk” youths from Long Beach, California who, inspired by Anne Frank, rose above their circumstances by writing about their lives.  Their stories were published as the bestseller The Freedom Writers Diary, and were dramatized in the Hollywood movie FREEDOM WRITERS.

Director and Academy Award-nominee Daniel Anker follows their stories from the first day as freshmen in 1994 to today. The catalyst for the events that changed their lives was an episode of the PBS series FRONTLINE that their teacher, Erin Gruwell, showed in the classroom.

The screening will be followed by discussion with Daniel Anker and Erin Gruwell.
