Gabriella Bier

Gabriella Bier graduated from the documentary department at the University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre in Stockholm 1997. Prior to that she worked as a journalist for press and TV, with African culture and social issues as field of interest. She has studied film science, History of Philosophy and Science and International Relations at the University of Stockholm. Since leaving film school she has been working as a filmmaker. Her works include GRÄNSLÖS KÄRLEK (2006) (LOVE WITHOUT BORDERS), THE SCHOOL PHOTO (2003), CAROLINE (1999), AMALIEGADE (1997) (AMALIESTREET). LOVE DURING WARTIME is Gabriella’s first feature length documentary. Her documentaries were theatrical released, were broadcast on Swedish TV and Nordic channels and toured the international film festival circuit. All of Gabriella Bier’s documentaries have something in common: they originate from arguments with her relatives and deal with sensitive topics: mixed marriages, crazy nationalism, fundamentalists, all films deal with cultural conflicts and are viewed from a personal angle. Next, Gabriella will shoot a documentary about Denmark, VÄNDA FLAGGAN EFTER VINDEN about how nationalism affects relationships between friends and family. Gabriella is just completing THE DIRECTOR’S DILEMMA, a book on her work as a documentary filmmaker, as part of an artistic science project at the University College. The book discusses the difficulties of making LOVE DURING WARTIME, when the subject is emotional and difficult and the director’s own feelings stand in the way.
For her next documentary for international release, she is currently researching fundamentalism and its fallout around the world. In addition, Gabriella has been teaching documentary classes at the University College of Film, coordinated seminars about Israeli/Palestinian documentaries, produced radio documentaries, written articles, and contributed to book anthologies, amongst others VERKLIGHETER (REALITIES), 2011, published by the Swedish Film Institute.
